Minot AFB, ND

Why not Minot?  Freezin’ is the Reason!  It has been two weeks since we first pulled onto base and so far the weather has been amazing.  The highs have typically been in the low/mid 70s (currently 53) and we have had tons of sunshine.   I know that cool summer days with long hours of sunshine lead to brutally cold winter days with long hours of darkness, but we will cross that bridge when we get to it.

Our time here so far has been great.  We are living on base in company grade officer housing, so we are surrounded by other young couples who are in a similar situation.  The base community is great and the simplicity of the city is a nice change.

Neither of us had ever been to North Dakota, so moving here has definitely been a new experience.  The state is beautiful and the people are incredibly nice.  I have quickly realized that, in Minot, when someone ask me how I am doing they are not only actually interested in the response, but very likely to follow-up on it.

All of our “stuff” was delivered yesterday, so I am currently surrounded by boxes.  Exactly one month had passed since they packed up our belongings in San Antonio… it is exciting to have everything back.  We utilized the week we had in our empty new home to do some painting.

On the way up, we spent a few days in CO were we got to catch up with a good friend from Wake Forest, do some hiking, explore Colorado Springs, Denver, Boulder and Ft. Collins, and attend a Rockies game (which ended with a walk-off home run).  From CO, we drove through Wyoming and the Black Hills of SD, where we visited Mt. Rushmore and spent the night in Rapid City.   We really enjoyed the road trip, despite the fact that we were driving two vehicles.  We have found that books on CD make long drives much more enjoyable.

As far as the base itself goes, the facilities here are generally fairly new and nice.  The fitness center is great, our house was just built, the shopping/grocery stores are new, and the outdoor recreation center has snow mobiles we can rent!

Well, time to get unpacking.  I will try to put up some pictures of our trip and the local area soon.

Mengagumkan.

Tinypulse

karyawan bahagia = senang masyarakat.

Puting kreativitas. Terus melemparkan ide-ide gila. Visi kami Manajemen Platform adalah cara untuk mulai mempersiapkan kreatif, bergerak selangkah lebih dekat untuk elemen, ide mengubah dunia. Ini memberikan pekerja suara dan merata kepemimpinan, yang kadang-kadang mengganggu kepuasan karyawan. Inovasi harus berakar pada budaya, dan cara yang bagus untuk melakukannya adalah untuk memiliki staf mulai berpikir tentang bagaimana hal itu bisa menjadi lebih baik.

San Francisco Day 4: At Last, the Bridge

I saved the Golden Gate Bridge for my last full day because I figured it would involve a lot of walking, which I was finally up for doing by Wednesday.

Kaiti and I started our day at Turtle Tower, a well-known Vietnamese restaurant in the Tenderloin area. She recommended I get their chicken noodle soup, which was good, but came with so many noodles that they sucked up all the soup before I had finished even half the bowl!

While planning for my trip, I had read that Tenderloin was to be avoided, but I couldn’t be sure how sketchy it really was. Kaiti seemed to be fine walking through it by herself.

After our brunch, we walked around the area trying to buy a box of tissues for our drippy noses (I had forgotten to bring my usual cache), and I decided that those cautioning against traveling through Tenderloin had the right idea. Everything was run-down and far less cute or well-maintained compared to the rest of the city. There were also a surprising number of Vietnamese restaurants — interesting that these businesses coexist peacefully alongside the sketchy Tenderloin population?

We finally found some tissues at a Walgreens. The ramshackle bodegas we tried were no help.

Then, onward to the bridge! For some reason the address that Kaiti put into her Lyft app directed us to the other side of the bridge, so we drove back and forth across it for no reason (including paying the extra tolls?!). At least it saved us the effort of walking across it I guess.

I saw quite a few of these GoCars around the city. Three wheels with hardly any visible protection from the elements/other cars — doesn’t look very safe to me?!

The bridge doesn’t look very impressive when I’m standing next to it, almost like it’s some kind of fake backdrop!

We hung out for a little bit at the Golden Gate Bridge Pavilion, but there isn’t much to look at except other tourists, so we took a car to Lands End for some much prettier views of the coast. I was intrigued to find a collection of coloring books (for adults, presumably) available in the gift shop. I guess it really is a thing now.

The trails at Lands End are surrounded by Monterey Cypress trees, which are non-native but very striking. The area is very beautiful and peaceful (though we did encounter a couple of wailing babies), perfect for a romantic walk or meditative hike.

On the western side of Lands End are the ruins of the Sutro Baths, an expansive and glamorous bathhouse from a century ago. Visitors are allowed to climb all over them, which is pretty fun.

After all the uphill walking from the previous day, I was not psyched to see more stairs. After the stairs, to only way to get down to the ruins is via a steep, gravelly slope, which was actually very scary! Kaiti got stuck at the top for a bit even though she’s been here before multiple times LOL.

The beach was beautiful, in a melancholy way. We spied a lone fisherman on the rock. (At least, we assumed he was fishing…but how many fish can you catch on the beach like this??)

Near the baths is also a random tunnel, in the middle of which is a hole that’s a result of the pounding from the waves. The sound of the water echoes loudly throughout the whole cave.

I guess the water collected in the ruins is just stagnant, because that stuff was nasty! Plus all the rocks nearby are stained white from bird poop.

For no real reason, we decided to walk down to the other end of the baths and hike up the side where we had just seen two people scramble down. They made it look easy, as did this lady in the pink shirt, but we got lost somewhere along the way and ended up taking the scenic route. It was a fun little adventure but my shoes got so dusty!

After resting our feet, I wanted to go to the Golden Gate Park and see the bison. Well, it was an unimpressive sight, as the bison were just huddled in their little feeding area and not moving around. I got one blurry picture. Oh well.

By this time, we hadn’t eaten for a good few hours, so we went to Charles Chocolates, which was at the top of my desserts list. If you look at the photos on Yelp or Instagram, you’d be forgiven for thinking this chocolate shop mainly sells sandwiches. They do an afternoon tea on Sundays, which I guess is more photogenic than the rest of its products.

But the chocolate!!! It was already almost 5 p.m. and we had a dinner reservation for 6:30, but that did not stop us from indulging in some chocolatey treats. We were the only ones in the store, so we took our time hemming and hawing over our choices.

20-charles 21-counter

The nice saleslady strongly recommended the canelés, which neither of us had ever had before, and they were indeed delicious! We also got a huge caramel chocolate chip cookie and a s’more — they make their own chocolate, marshmallow and graham cookie. Yummmmm. Even better was eating our desserts on the sunny patio!

Of course I also picked up two bars of chocolate, after sampling them in the store. (That’s literally all I brought back from SF — chocolate.) I loved how smooth and creamy the chocolate was!

We were full but still found room to have dinner at Loló Cevicheria, where we met up with Jeni and Betty to split some tasty ceviche and tacos.

Also, I don’t know if it’s just a SF thing or a young-adult restaurant thing, but it seemed like half the places we went to had ditched the traditional receipt tray/book in favor of some other container, like the little metal cup on the table pictured above. Anybody else noticing a trend?

Anyway, after dinner, Kaiti and I went to a bar I had wanted to go since day one (but had been too sick to even try): Upcider! I love hard cider, but there doesn’t seem to be anywhere to drink it in NYC. This place was devoted to the stuff!

It was a great ending to a mostly great trip.

Why I Didn’t Turn My Facebook Profile French

The scenes I saw online covering the attacks in Paris reminded me of the faces I saw in Boston.

I arrived the night the two brothers were identified on Twitter; when the manhunt for the marathon bombers officially kicked off. I left Harvard’s Chemistry Building a minute after Harvard went on official lockdown. I strolled down deserted Cambridge streets alongside a friend on his bike laughing and carefree, completely unaware of the fact we were ten minutes ahead of the brothers on their way to Watertown. I lay awake on his sofa for the majority of the night listening to police scanners, gun shots, and other fearsome noises emanating from a mere mile away.

When I left Boston, once the brothers were caught, once lockdown was lifted and the city reawakened, I caught the T back to the bus station. The train stopped between stations unexpectedly. Fear levels skyrocketed. There is a face people make in terror; there is a desperate smile which begs not to be killed. “I will be your friend,” it seems to say. “Please don’t kill me, I have a family. I will be missed. I’m not ready to die yet.”

When I watch the images flooding out of Paris this weekend, I see that fear filling our televisions, and powering our solidarity. It’s the fear that reminds us we’re all human. Despite this, I still cannot change my profile photo to the tricolour flag. Initially, I think my guttural distaste came from the tackiness; this is an easy fad. It’s the waving of the flag. It’s an instinctual, knee-jerk reaction of tit-for-tat. ISIS, whomever they may be, are killing for an idea. We are reacting in ignorance. Even if I were to put a pin in the arguments surrounding the rest of the world this weekend: Japan, Beruit, Kenya, Syria… mindless deaths that are as worthy of social media interest, I would still not paint my profile photo with the French flag. It is, in the words of the Independent, “Paint-by-numbers solidarity when it’s foisted on you by one of the most powerful companies in the world (and it) is simply not the way to help a traumatised nation in shock after murder.” How we help a traumatised nation is never actually decided, but I do think the point which links this foistation to that of ISIS publicly propagating itself through social media is one worth pondering.

Tricolour profiles is the Western band-aid. It makes the Western hemisphere feel better; they’ve helped, they’ve shown support, they’ve mourned the possibility of their own homes under attack, all from the safe distance of behind their computer screens. They eliminate the helplessness one feels when one watches those fearful smiles, be they on their television screen or reflected back at them in their mirrors.

As more reports of more attacks and possible bomb threats (one, incidentally at Harvard ) scatter their way across our news feeds, perhaps our band-aid is necessary to hold us together as we watch our world burn.

But, it does not excuse our ignorance with regards to immigration, to Islamophobia, or to the Syrian civilian casualties we pretend do not exist. It does not allow us to enter a gun fight with knives. ISIS is an idea. You can’t bomb an idea. You could wipe out the entire Eastern side of the globe and that idea would still exist. Bombs are futile. Why are we not questioning what it is they really hate about the West and tackling that? Why are we not investigating further what incites people to become radicalized —what is so attractive about their idea? Is it the sense of purpose? Something is playing into a very human desire somewhere — is it power? Is it responsibility? What is it that makes us so determined to see ourselves as good—what if we’re not? One man’s terrorist is another man’s freedom fighter after all. That is not to excuse the atrocities currently overpowering our news stations, but it is to try and combat the problem calmly from a place of the peace we are trying to achieve.  I don’t know the answer to these questions. I just think it would be a slightly more productive use of our time than banning “anyone from the Islamic faith” from your store. You want to “put your country first?” Don’t give into the bullies.

Tonight, as I write this, I am not just praying for Paris. Nor am I just praying for those lost in the bowels of Mark Zuckerberg’s empire, hoping that a tricolor filter will keep ISIS from their own door “Not in my backyard, Sir!” I am praying for every single one of those fearful smiles that will haunt my dreams, and the realization that the world as we know it, shall never be quite the same again.
